Why is the term “friend zone” so popular when the term “unrequited love” already exists and is more accurate? I suspect it’s because it shifts the locus of responsibility. “Unrequited love” focuses on the person who has the crush. The feelings being discussed are the crushing person’s, thus the responsibility in on them to get over their crush and move on. “Friend zone”, on the other hand, focuses on the crush object’s choices. The phrase erases the agency of the crushing person. All blame for their pain is put on the crush object. “Unrequited love” is something that can happen to both sexes, but “friend zone” is a sexist concept that implies that women are solely responsible for men’s happiness, and not men themselves.

2012 Year in Review for Cats [Click for full calendar]

Between waiting to be let outside and waiting to be let back in, it’s been a memorable year for our feline friends. Let’s look back at what made 2012 so special for a few select, random cats.

February 14: While a lonely cat owner writes a sad Valentine’s e-mail to an ex, affectionate Persian cat, Toby, attempts to cheer her up by walking on the keyboard and revealing anus. Accomplishes job.

March 21 – 24: With family away on vacation, Jingles, a brown and black calico, stays home to protect nothing and watch cat sitter perform oral sex on a guy she keeps inviting over. Does not break eye contact with this man during entire process.

April 28: Boyfriend and girlfriend take cat for a walk to feel normal. Cat clings to Earth as if gravity doesn’t exist. Couple feels less normal than ever.

June 4: Four unnamed cats were adopted by a woman who promptly named them all Michael, after her husband. Her husband’s name is David. [Keep Reading]

When a sniper’s bullet struck Pfc. Colton Rusk, the first to reach his body was his best friend Eli – a bomb-sniffing, black Labrador so loyal he snapped at other Marines who rushed to his fallen handler.

The two were inseparable. Military dogs are supposed to sleep in kennels when deployed, but Rusk broke the rules and let Eli curl up with him on his cot. Other times, the dog took up the entire sleeping bag. Rusk ate ready-to-eat meals, so that’s what Eli ate instead of dog food, Darrell Rusk said.

“Whatever is mine is his,” Colton Rusk wrote on his Facebook page.

After Rusk died Dec. 6, his parents decided they wanted to adopt his dog. They picked Eli up Thursday at Lackland Air Force to take him back to their home in rural South Texas. It was only the second time that a U.S. military dog has been adopted by the family of a handler killed in combat.

has it ever occurred to you that you could change your life right this second if you really wanted to?  you could stand up and yell at your teacher if you wanted to, you could place yourself in a life or death situation if you wanted, you could even take that risk and just spontaneously and passionately kiss the one you really love by surprise.  you could change the entire outcome of our lives, and if our lives are really as bad as we say they are, why won’t we take those chances.
